It has a prestigious "pedigree" that has endured for almost a century. The Lombardia Under 23 is gearing up (October 5, 2024) to make its mark on cycling history. President Daniele Fumagalli and his team at Velo Club Oggiono, the event's organizing society, proudly announce the list of teams that have so far confirmed their participation in the 96th edition.
Thirty-five teams have registered, with 24 from abroad and 12 from Italy. The big news is the participation of a team from Rwanda, the May Stars, a country that will host the World Championships next year, marking the first time the event will be held in Africa.
The provisional start list includes development teams from Soudal Quick Step, Visma Lease a Bike, Lotto Dstny, UAE Team Emirates Gen Z, Lidl Trek Future Racing, Groupama FDJ, Astana Qazaqstan, Arkea B&B Hotels, Bingoal WB, and from the United States, Hagens Berman Jayco. These are just a few of the teams that will elevate this year's edition: athletes from all over the world will arrive in Oggiono, in the province of Lecco, for an event that promises to be special and of great media impact. A moment to proudly say, "I was there."
The percentage of registered Italian teams, however, is currently rather low. The decision by some important teams to forgo a race of this caliber is certainly not a positive message for our young riders. The Lombardia U23 should be embraced without hesitation.
